Pop Culture Vacuum

Kanye West has finally released his video for “Monster,” the ode to extravagance that is everything we should expect from such a talented and megalomaniacal rapper. As with anything Kanye, there is controversy because of the “misogynist” overtones of the video. The shock is unnecessary. It should be pointed out that hip-hop videos are steeped in the objectification of women. Kanye just found a new way to do it. He made it artful. West, however, stands outside of hip-hop, and that is a large reason for the backlash against the video. He can show women dancing on screen, but heaven-forbid he show them attacking him, or even dead.
